Can Dogs Eat Eggs?

This post will answer the question, ‘can dogs eat eggs?’ and point out the do’s and don’ts of feeding dogs eggs so that you can safely incorporate this food into your dog’s diet!

Eggs are incredibly nutrient-dense, containing vitamin A, B vitamins, folate, phosphorus, choline, and selenium. Eggs are also a great source of protein and fatty acids!

In a past post about feeding dogs human foods, we mentioned that eggs are a dog-friendly food as long as they are cooked all the way through and prepared plain, without any seasoning. Many healthy baked dog treat recipes include eggs, and scrambled eggs are known to be a good bland food option for dogs experiencing an upset stomach.

The “Do’s” of Feeding Dogs Eggs:

  • Serve cooked
    • Both hard boiled and scrambled eggs are safe for dogs to consume.
  • Use the whole egg
    • Fatty acids and vitamins are concentrated in the egg yolk. Egg yolk contains lutein, which supports vision health!
    • Egg shells are calcium rich.
    • Egg whites are a complete protein source because they contain all of the nine essential amino acids.
      • Egg whites are also lower in fat and calories, so this would be a good option for dogs that need to lose or maintain a certain weight.
  • Cut into bite-sized pieces to avoid choking hazard
    • If feeding eggshells, be sure to grind them up then sprinkle a small amount onto food.
  • Buy local, organic eggs!
    • Organic eggs are free of dangerous chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, animal byproducts, and synthetic fertilizers that are used in conventional egg production.

The “Don’ts” of Feeding Dogs Eggs:

  • DON’T feed dogs raw eggs
    • There is debate over whether dogs can eat raw eggs, however, it is best to feed dogs cooked eggs to avoid risk of salmonella infection.
  • DON’T use seasoning
    • When feeding dogs eggs, simply cook them without adding any seasoning or oils.
    • Salt and pepper are dangerous in excessive amounts and garlic (along with other members of the allium family) is toxic.

The 3 Surprising Benefits of Feeding Dogs Eggs:

  1. Eggs are considered a complete protein!
  2. Eggs can be fed to dogs for weight loss or used as a bland food for dogs with an upset stomach.
  3. Eggs are good for eye health.
